12 Bento #133 - Double Noodle Bento

Monday, November 8, 2010

This double bento is from Friday evening.  We took E to have an evening playdate with our friend's daughter K (while we parents went to dinner AT the movie theatre) so I made them noodles and wontons.  They are just regular ramen noodles, but I always make the sauce that seasons them myself and throw the powder packet away.  There is way, way too much sodium and MSG in those things!  It's just soy sauce, garlic, ginger, dash of rice wine vinegar and toasted sesame oil, and some pepper.  Sometimes I get a little wild and add a dash of fish sauce and some sliced green onions.  I would normally add some frozen veggie mix (peas, carrots, corn, etc.) but Miss K is a little finicky, so I held off.  Of course, the animal chopsticks make it extra fun.

That looks so good! Funny but my daughter asked for noodle in her lunch, and I do the same thing and make the sauce myself for that same reason. Sometimes I'll use the sauce packet and sprinkle like you would salt, just a touch. Today I used ginger garlic paste, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce and a dash of sesame oil. Sometimes I'll throw in som tahini!

I bet the girls had a good time and a good snack.

Tahini sounds yummy, I'll have to remember that one.

The girls had a blast with K's grandma, can't wait to do it again!

Yum! I love the lighting in your photos! Always so bright and beautiful.

Do you think the noodles would be good with just play old soy sauce? That and the wine vinegar is all i have of those ingredients but i would love to do away with those salty packets too.

@Kelly, I certainly think you can season with just some soy sauce, and some vinegar for a little tang. It's a simple, universal flavor, I think.

I'm in agonies over the lighting LOL! I think they come out looking overexposed sometimes, with my new light fixture. I'm trying to balance it!

Your sauce combo sounds really good. And yes, the fun animal chopsticks make it extra-interesting. I'd eat with those in a heartbeat!

I love this idea! I never thought of throwing the packets away and seasoning myself, instead I just avoid them. Such a great idea since ramen noodles are so cheap!

I stumbled across your site today and have been browsing through all your posts. Very nice!

I know this is an older post, but do you happen to have the ratios you use for the sauce? Also is the ginger fresh or powdered?

Also one last question, I notice in some of the lunches the bread for the sandwiches appears really thin. Is that a particular brand you buy or do you make your own and slice it really thin?

Thank you.

Hi Linnyhb, thanks for stopping by!

For my own sauce I use about a tablespoon of soy sauce, fresh grated ginger, (as much as you like, but I use about 1/8 - 1/4 tsp, or you can certainly use powdered) and dashes of both the rice wine vinegar and sesame oil. Experiment to your taste. :)

As for the bread, I do make my own sometimes, but I buy lots of my bread from the Publix bakery, and they have a thin slice option that they can do for you.

Thank you very much. I'll give it a try soon and see if I can entice my kiddos to eat it.

Unfortunately in our area we don't have Publix but I'll ask at our local market bakery if they can slice it thinly for me. Thanks for the tip.
