3 Bento #224 - Piano Recital Peanut Butter & Jelly Roll

Monday, December 5, 2011

Yesterday Miss E had her winter piano recital!  I'm so proud of her, she's been practicing very hard.  I made this lunch with some cute music notes.

I added a special chocolate treat and a cute note. =)

Here's my little pianist.

Her curtsy just melts my heart!  I'm biased, but I think that's about the best rendition of Yankee Doodle and London Bridge that I've ever heard!  ;)

0 Bento #184 - Tropical Mauli Ola Bento

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

This bento is inspired by the new video posted by my cousin James' foundation for people with genetic diseases.  The Mauli Ola Foundation has been focusing on taking kids with cystic fibrosis out surfing, which happens to be a natural (and super fun!) treatment for people suffering from this disease.  Not only that, but the Mauli Ola Foundation is going to be featured during National CF Awareness Month on the CBS show Hawaii Five-O on May 2nd (10/9 C)

The Mauli Ola Foundation exists to introduce surfing as a natural treatment to people with genetic disorders. Since 2007 we have concentrated on the amazing connection between Surfing and Cystic Fibrosis. We have taken nearly 400 CF Patients Surfing at over 40 MOF Surf Experience Days. In 2011 we look to expand our program to help patients affected with Cancer and Alpha 1 Antitypsin. We appreciate your interest and would love for you to join the Mauli Ola Foundation Ohana by becoming a member and help us with our mission to help people with genetic disorders through Surfing.

Aloha, James Dunlop
As for the lunch, I made homemade basil pesto "sand", and set up carrots "surf boards" around it, and "palm tree" PBJ sandwiches surrounding a pool of fish.  The flowers are orchids picked up by Ella at the Atlanta Botanical Garden the other day (she picked them up off the ground after they'd already fallen off.)  We also have some cute flamingos hanging out with the other elements.

Bento #184 - Carrots, basil pesto, peanut butter, banana & honey sandwich on whole grain bread and Goldfish crackers.

This year's events are planned from California to Hawaii, from New York to Florida, so if you live in any of these areas, check them out! Please visit mauliola.org to learn more about this great cause and see how you can help.  Click here to make a secure donation.

I am so proud and excited for Nari!  She's getting her own show on the Travel Channel!
It's called Komrads, check it out!

Here's a snap of Ella and Nari (and my sister Liz, and two of my aunts in the background) at our family reunion last July.

4 Meat Glue.

Monday, April 4, 2011

So, I was about to post a recipe for baked pears, but was so thoroughly incensed by a video I was sent that I thought I'd share this instead.  This is a great argument for buying your meat from a small local butcher you trust.  Not only are the chemicals used highly questionable for health reasons, but also countless people will have objections to using blood plasma in food for religious reasons (myself included.)  Take a look.

What is going on here?  Why are these chemicals being allowed in order to lie to consumers about the meat they are buying?

EDIT:  Here's another article with more information.

1 Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

This is totally brilliant, a long watch, but so worth it, and entertaining to boot. I think everyone should take a peek, it gives me chills watching it. He is proving that HFCS (actually, all fructose) is poison to our bodies, and talking about how changing the Food Pyramid in 1980 was a disaster (recommending lowering our fat intake.)

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. 0 Shiver & Shake

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

I'm such a kid, I do this every time I heat up my stainless pans! It's so cool to watch the water shiver and shake and skate around like mercury.
